What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most trusted English language proficiency test, recognised by universities, employers, governments, and professional bodies globally. Whether you want to study abroad, work in an English-speaking country, or apply for a visa, IELTS helps you achieve your goals.
Aim
The course aims to raise students’ level of English language proficiency and practice academic skills in a genuine academic context, with a focus on integrated reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Course Description
With flexible entry and exit points offered throughout the year, this course equips students with the academic skills essential for critical reading, critical thinking, communication for intercultural group work and essay writing to meet the requirements of UK higher education. Learning experiences are designed to best suit the learning outcomes of the course and mostly consist of lectures, class-based discussion, tutorials, and workshops. The course is an in-sessional module meaning that it is run in term time; the students are required to attend two hours per week.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Read efficiently to identify, understand, and synthesise key information from academic texts;
- Write a short essay in which the register is formal;
- Participate confidently in group discussion tasks in response to set reading texts.
- Take effective notes on, summarise, understand, and respond to the content of academic texts;
- Reflect on and develop their ability to learn both collaboratively and independently.
IELTS is compulsory for our students and is included in their weekly timetable, with no extra charges

Which IELTS Test Do You Need?
It’s crucial to select the correct IELTS test based on your requirements. The School of Coding & AI offers preparation for:

Life Skills
A test of Speaking and Listening for specific UK visa applications, such as: A1 Level: For a Family of a Settled Person visa.
B1 Level: For Indefinite Leave to Remain or UK Citizenship applications.

The IELTS test assesses your English proficiency across four key skills:
- Speaking (11-14 minutes) – A face-to-face interview with an examiner to assess fluency and communication.
- Listening (30 minutes) – Understanding conversations and monologues in English.
- Reading (60 minutes) – Answering questions based on academic or general reading passages.
- Writing (60 minutes) – Expressing ideas effectively through structured writing tasks.
The total test duration is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

The IELTS test is available throughout the year at authorised test centres worldwide. Book your test at a location near you through the School of Coding & AI. IELTS uses a 9-band scoring system, with each skill graded individually. Your overall band score is an average of all four skills. Most universities and immigration authorities require a minimum score of 5.5 – 7.0, depending on the application type.
Results are available within 13 days after the test.
